Any of the stories that are not reported by mass media are bound to be controversial. I recommend topics that are dismissed as "conspiracy theories" because there is a rich source of verifiable information surrounding most on the Internet. In most cases, important historic events are not reported accurately.

I'd focus on a topic such as, "Three buildings at the NYC WTC did not collapse because of fire alone, as reported in the 9/11 Commission report."

You will find lots of supporting information for your arguments on the Internet. (Search '911 Truth') You can anticipate weak arguments against any conspiracy, like: "Nobody can keep a secret as big as it would need to be." If you read the truth site, it will provide the convincing counter argument: "The Manhattan Project (building the A-bomb) was kept silent with 10s of thousands of scientists".

If you'd like a more conventional unreported topic. I'd learn about the real reason that we are running out of oil .(This was predicted in the '60s.) Search using the "Peak Oil" query. The data you gather can be verified on either topic.

Anything that does not match what we see on TV or radio tends to raise the anger of many people, however, it's always good to challenge our assumptions. Regardless of how impossible these events seem to be, these topic are good topics to sharpen your critical thinking skills. It's good because so many people go off in irrational thought processes when you raise them, and it allows you to force the discussion to follow a logical thread.

A topic I don't recommend is the moon landing hoax. This one hinges on the fact that the Van Allen belt is extremely radioactive and the space suits and space capsule has practically no ability to stop high enegy radioactive particles. (Unless you have an astrophysicist in the family.)

Otherwise, you will have much more fun with these topics that are not reported by FOX news. A more difficult topic would be explaining "Why the mass media does not report stories that conflict with the 'official story'."
