He found where he was going didn't he? Its instinctual, long, long ago when man only had a spear and a fur coat. He had to know where he was going or die. So after a few millennium and a few thousand wrong turns, he began to finally develop, by evolution, a kind of mental compass. As long as he followed his mental compass he could always reach his destination and the survival of his wife and children was assured. Today, although much reduced in accuracy, from lack of use, his mental compass is still there, in his head, trying to tell him the right path to follow. Because its an instinct born of countless frigid travels in Antarctic like conditions. He can't ignore it. So just be patient with him. Don't nag the poor guy.

Because we know where we are going. We just don't recognize a certain area for a few moments. We knew it all along. We just like to make you think that we don't. ;)
