Do they do any kind of mechanical work on these junkers at all, or is it all bells and whistles and body work? I'm sure some of these cars have bad engines, trannys, etc in them, how could they not? Do they fix these at all, and just don't show that part on the show, or do they just do body work? To me it doesn't make much sense to pimp out a ride just to have it break down on you on the side of the road on the way home due to engine failure or something.

Yes they do fix bad engines and transmissions and etc. You are right it wouldnt make sense to just do body work and the car doesn't run well. I have seen more than one episode where they fixed engines and such, not just fixed but upgraded. I'm sure it's just edited to what they think ppl will find more interesting.

If you an constant looker of Pimp My Road, you will know that they do fix your engine. Some times they even replace it with a better one.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. But they do tend to it. Why would they want to waste our time showing us an engine that is in good condition but just needs a tune up when they can show us all the other things they spend their time doing to make the car look good.
I say one episode where they did indeed take out the old engine and made a few adjustments to it so that the owner could have used it to race.
Look again. From the beginning.

I do think that they do the insides of the cars too. I did see on one car where they had to add a second battery to fuel the tv that they added to the car. They opened the hood to show that and the car was all nice and shinny inside the engine area.
I bet that the recipients get SCREWED on their taxes as those cars get valued at 40k or more and it is included as money on the irs forms.
