Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb here at the risk being cheesy. The first movie that popped into my head was Pete's Dragon. It was a Disney movie from back in the day. The kid had an imaginary friend that was a Dragon named Elliot. I just remember this movie because I used to watch it a lot as a kid.

It was Dragon Heart ... that was a good movie. They also made a direct to dvd squeal called Dragon Heart 2 !!!!

Well, a new one is called Eragon. That fits your description except that the boy is a Dragon Rider. Not a prince. Awesone movie.

can not help w/ that, sorry. As a baby (early 80s) I watched a action picture (no longer lively) named Dragonslayer. no longer too long after the action picture grow to be released, the 1st actual digitzed 3 dimensional video arcade activity grow to be released donning a similar namesake: Dragonslayer.
