anyone can call theirselfs what ever they wish !!!! but may get tricky when changing details in legal matters or offical !!!! so the best way is by "deedpole" go to a solicitors (they will inform you what to bring as in the form of identity now !!!!) a standard form is signed and witnessed stating the new name !!!!! this form is legal and regonised, so changes to passports, bank accounts n/insurance etc can be carried out easily

The laws regarding a change of name vary by jurisdiction. My understanding is that in some places, like New York State, common law provides that you may go by any name that you wish, so long as there is no intent to defraud. However, even in that environment, you may need to obtain a court order recognizing your new name, in order to persuade banks and other institutions to accept the new name.

Thus, in the United States, the short answer would be:make an application in a civil court of competent jurisdiction. Once you've obtained the court order, bring it to the Social Security Administration, and perhaps the Motor Vehicle bureau, in order to obtain new identification, and be prepared to show the court order to banks, employers, schools, etc whenever you ask to have records changed to reflect the new name.

You just adopt the new surname, no formalities involved. Case law from the 19th century gives people the right to call themselves whatever they choose, as long as its not for financial gain.
People will tell you you need to do it by Deed Poll, but this is not the case.

you need to apply for a deed poll, the best place in the UK to get one is www.ukdps.co.uk, they take around a week to process and cost £34, that price dosent include cost for changing details on passport, driving licence etc...

id recommend only getting it from ukdps, theyre recognized by ALL government agencies and offer a refund if its not accepted anywhere

Anyone can change their name by Deed Poll. It's relatively simple, just a few forms and a small fee. You can do it online here:

http://www.ukdps.co.uk/

(The official UK Deed Poll service website.)

In my state, it is a Court Procedure. Relatively simple process. You just file the needed paperwork, pay the fees and see the judge.
