I haven't been to see a doctor since I had really bad heartburn at 22 weeks of pregnancy. He couldn't give me anything for it anyway!

My daughter is now 4 months old, she had never even met a doctor, she hasn't needed to thank goodness! But when I took her for her first set of immunisations yesterday they refused to do them until we had seen a doctor! We did, he looked at her and put a stethoscope on her chest, but that was all. He wanted to look at me too but I didn't see any reason to! I'm fine!

She eventually had her injections but I'm still confused. Why did we have to see the doctor? Any theories?

Thanks in advance!

I think you've all read me a little wrong, or you must do things differently where you are. Please don't threaten me with Child Protective Services, I have taken my daughter to every check up I've ever been asked to, but she's still not met a doctor. My antenatal care was provided at home by midwives, her birth was attended at home by a midwife and I have regular visits each month from the Health Visitor. This is the first set of vaccinations she has been called for, I am in the UK and this is the NHS we're talking about. Other health professionals have attended us but I was wondering why I had to see the GP (No, we don't choose our doctors or have paediatricians apart from in hospitals) Please do not read me wrong.

The vaccinations are done by a nurse and normally you don't have to see the doctor at all, completely different office.

sms - I researched the vaccines fully and I am letting her have only selected ones and only seperately.

Thankyou for your answer.

I'm assuming you aren't from the US, but I could be wrong. Many people on here forget that there are several countries on here, which is awesome!

I believe here in the US it is standard procedure to go at 2 weeks, 2 months, 4 months, etc. We do shots at 2, 4, 6, and 1 yr. they are broken up so that the child can get little doses. There are about 7 different vaccines that kids get. All but two are required by law before a child can enter Kindergarten.

They will not give your child shots if she has any kind of sickness. Way too much liability on them if she is really sick after the shot.

Sorry for the judgement on here. Drives me crazy. Best of luck with your baby!

If she hasn't seen the doctor in quite some time, they will want to update her record. Also, like it was said before, giving a sick baby a vacine for a disease she might already be carrying, can be dangerous. More than likely, they just want to make sure she is not sick in any other way. They're just watching out for her health since that is what they're trained to do. Also, many doctors will not treat a patient without regular prevention appointments. You really should keep up with well-baby visits just so you don't have this hassle again.

There is much more involved with infants and giving them vaccines with out a physical first.
First, a child will not receive vaccines if they are ill at the time of the check up.
Second, the doctor needs to check the baby developmentally for milestones. If a child is not advancing or developing normally, that would need to be addressed.
Seeing a doctor is good practising medicine and you should be happy that is the way it is done for the safety and welfare of your child.

They should have seen her within a few days of life and right after birth. She should have had several immunizations in the first month and some more after a couple of months. She also should have been given a PKU test that screens for potential diseases that you can't see. Just because she hasn't had anything wrong with her that you noticed doesn't mean that it is okay not to have her checked up. I am going to assume that the doctor you went to was a doc in the box or someone who would see you right now and not a pediatrician who would be able to see things more than a normal doc since pediatricians are docs just for kids.

It's just the way it is set up. The whole medical industry is interlinked -
My children have not had vaccinations and won't get them! I have not had them taken to a doctor and they have not needed it.
When you start taking them to Doctors they start wanting to give them antibiotics for each little sniffle, them your baby's immune system is dependant from the beginning of their life! Let alone vaccines of chemicals and animal dna corsing through their veins and entering the brain! And people wonder about the link between Autism and vaccines?!!?

To everyone else answering this question:
Doctors aren't for baby monitoring they are for medical issues that we can not help ourselves with!

Don't knock it till you've read the articles I mentioned!

one more thing, I recently visited brifly with a P.A and I told her that my children had never been on anti-biotics and she was astounded and said "wow, that's amazing!" - if she only knew what was behind my satment

All children need routine medical care to make sure that they are healthy and growing the way that they should be. You should definetly be having routine checkups during pregnancy to make sure that everything is well with you and the baby. By the age of 4 months, she should have gone several times. In order to be immunized children also need to be in the best of health. I can't stress how important it is that you get routine checkups for your daughter. They can uncover things at checkups that could lead to serious complications, but can be prevented if found early.

It's always best for a newborn to keep regular doctor visits because the doctors know exactly what to look for as far as the baby developing on tract. Although he may have only put the stethiscope to her chest and didn't do much of anything else, he was able to hear her respiratory system...making sure her breathing was okay...steady...and that she wasnt' congested. You wouldn't want your baby to suddenly stop breathing and not know why.

The place giving her vaccinations couldn't do them without her seeing a doctor because they would've been taking on too high of a risk. Some immunizations can cause reactions that are harmful to a child, so it's best to have them checked out so that you can avoid such situations.

If I were you, I would consider myself rather lucky. In most states, if you neglect to take your infant into the doctors, DFS will be called and you take the chance of having your child taken from u. Congratulations for ducking the law.

Because it is a racket. We can't get access to the tests (there are many that are like OTC pregnancy tests) and we can't get access to drugs. Most morons can run the simple tests that doctors do and decide if you need antibiotics or not. When someone figures out (drug companies) that their sales will go WAY up when they allow the general public to be more proactive on their health then we will quit bothering doctors ( and EMERGENCY ROOMS) when we really don't need to...like for colds, flu etc. Big brother always has to get their hands into our lives too. bureaucrats LOVE CONTROL...and don't give it up very easily.

It really bugs me that we can't self prescribe. Too many people self medicate with beer and wine etc....because Doctors are afraid to treat pain. Jeez Louis.

This IS a pet peeve of mine too!

My son got his shots by his doctor so there was no need to go see a seperate Dr for a check up and then go somewhere else for his shots. I don't know, but it may be because they want to make sure the childs growth is progressing properly.

I would change doctors if ALL he did was listen to her heartbeat. They should be checking her weight, height, head circumference to make sure she is growing at a good rate. They should also be checking out the mobility of her arms & legs, checking out her hearing & vision. Regular "well-baby" visits for your baby is very important, as well as seeing the doctor when she becomes sick.
