Billy Hayes, who wrote the book Midnight Express based on his experience in a Turkish prison is very much alive, and active in the entertainment industry.

Great movie, eh?? I believe he is still alive but have no idea where he lives. And from what I hear, some Mexican prisons aren't much better.
