Nothing is certain to guarantee a girl, but the theory of timing intercourse to choose the sex seems to have some merit.

Boy sperm generally swim faster.
Girl sperm generally live longer.

Ideally, if you have sex a couple of days before you expect to ovulate, and do not have sex again until you're sure ovulation is over, then mostly girl sperm will be present to inseminate the ovum.

Having sex daily during the ovulation phase means that boy sperm make up the majority of "first responders".

It can never be fool-proof, though, because of differences in acidity in the woman's vagina, cervix, and womb, *plus* it doesn't really just take *one* sperm to become pregnant-- several hundred thousand usually end up beating themselves to death bumping up against the ovum, breaking down its cell wall, before that ONE lucky sperm finally breaks through. So the boy sperm could all get there first, and the first girl sperm on the scene could be the one to do the honors.

I've not had this "work" but this is what I've heard about ttc a girl. Supposedly the "girl" sperm for a lack of a better word are slower swimmers. The "boy" sperm swim faster and reach the egg first. Depending on when you ovulate - if you want a girl have sex a day or two before you ovulate so the boy swimmers have already reached there and burned themselves out - and the girl swimmers will reach there just as the egg is being released.

If you’re interested in at-home gender selection, the first thing you must understand is that a woman can not biologically determine the sex of her child. Every woman has eggs that contain X chromosomes. If the sperm that fertilizes the egg contains a Y chromosome, the woman will give birth to a baby boy. However, if the sperm that fertilizes one of these eggs contains another X chromosome, she’ll give birth to a daughter.

When a man ejaculates, between 200 and 400 million sperm are released into the woman's vagina. Some of these sperm contain Y chromosomes, while others contain X chromosomes. However, only one sperm is needed to fertilize an egg. All theories regarding how to conceive a boy using at-home gender selection are based on the belief that couples can create an environment that gives an advantage to the sperm containing the Y chromosome
