To create a seperate brand identity for a particular product.

Lexus and Toyota come off the same production line in Japan. Toyota felt the need to have a seperate brand for their luxuary division so Lexus was born.

However inside Japan there was no Lexus branding as theJapanese held the Toyota name in such high esteem anyway. The original Lexus LS400 was marketed as the Toyota Celsior inside Japan.

Infiniti and Acura do not exist in Japan nor in many other countries around the world.
