Actually, despite your assertions and the nut-job conspiracy theories in some of the other answers (did you all get together to flood this category?), the United States didn't become a laughing stock in the Islamic world because of President Bush. Over eight years of Bill Clinton, starting with Somalia and ending with the USS Cole bombing (and with the African embassy bombings in between), he allowed United States interests to be repeatedly attacked - largely without response. Usama bin Laden attacked the WTC because he had been led to believe, by the United States' pattern of behavior, that he could get away with it.

In any event, your question (which is not really a question at all, but an assertion of opinion) is logically flawed in that it assumes that we, as a country, cannot walk and chew gum at the same time. Despite the commitments in Iraq, there are troops in the regions along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border where bin Laden is thought to be hiding - effectively keeping him pinned down. Usama may not (although he very well may) be dead, but he certainly isn't effectively leading al-Quaeda at this point. Has it not occurred to you that there have been no terrorist attacks since bin Laden was chased into his cave?

Wow are you off the mark. Read the 9/11 report which states that Osama was in custody in the Sudan during the Clinton Administration and was offered up for his part in the first WTC bombing. Billy was busy with Monica then and told the Sudan, naw that would just piss him off so let him go. Turned out pretty well. He dropped the ball on this one, and is trying to brush it under the carpet because otherwise it will keep coming at him and he will be further disgraced.

I doubt it has anything to do with family ties, if I'm a police officer and I'm friends with a family that has a murderer in it, I'm still going to hunt his *** down. And one black sheep should not spoil the herd.

As for the Iraq and Afghanistan, I only hope that they can create their own identity after all this and stabilize and realize their potential considering their huge amounts of raw natural resources. The Islamic world generally brought many advances, most notably in science and technology in pre-modern times, it would be nice to see that potential for exceptional ability realized.

I also hope that with the change in President coming in 2008 that bridges will be built to make up for some that were burned with this war.

The administration knew perfectly well that the Al Kiaeda movement originated in , was funded by and their missions carried out by none other than an anti US contingency of militant jihadist embedded in the wealth and power structure of the Saudi elite..
This Cabal of terrorists is in contention with cooperation between the House of Saud and the US in controlling oil resource and subsequent massive investment by friendly Saudi Royals (many of them corrupt to the 9’s) in the US stock market..
If in point of fact the Administration were to go to the Saudi Royals and tell them to clean house or else this would potentially trigger civil war to break out in Saudi Arabia which in turn would threaten access to the oil resource as well as potentially result in the withdrawal of Saudi money from the US stock market and that event would be catastrophic to many huge US/Saudi based cooperate enterprises.
* note rapid withdrawal and subsequent protection of some 160+ select Saudis (many of them of the Bin Lauden family) in being flown out of the US within hours of the 9/11 attack.
Soooooo-------- the Saudis get the kid glove treatment even though they are the parent of Alkaeda and the subsequent acceleration of militant Islamic jehadists in response to the occupation of Iraq..
As to Iraq, truth be told the primary reason we went into Iraq is for the real-estate, location, location, location.
Sadam’s military power was in shambles, his excesses against his people were legendary, his ambitions were a threat to the entire region as well as the US and 9/11 and the probability of WMD enabled the Administration to gain popular support for a bid at the prize which if won would put US military might smack dab in the middle of the largest oil reserves on the planet.
If you control the flow of oil in the mid east you not only solve your energy needs for decades to come you also have the ability to bend countries world wide to your will.
