A cover letter accompanies a resume and is addressed to whomever you are told to send your resume. Basically, it highlights your specific qualifications for the job and why you think you would be a good fit for the organization. It differs from your resume in that it summarizes the qualifications you have they are looking for or highlights any prestigous experience, awards or education you've had in that field and kind of gives you a chance to sell yourself to them. It's also your chance to show your communication skills too, so watch your grammar, spelling and punctuation. The old school used to say that a cover letter should be no more than a couple of small paragraphs, but I would say it should be no more than a page. After all, the interview is where you'll really have a chance to let them know all about you. This is more of an opportunity to snag the interview so you want to give them just enough to get them interested in calling you. Once again, stress your qualifications and how they (and you) would fit well with the position and organization and what the benefits of hiring you would be to their company. End the letter on a positive note by saying something like, "I look forward to hearing from you shortly" or "I look forward to the opportunity to meet with you personally and discuss this exciting opportunity further."

Hey! Here's a really good site for examples and info. Hope this helps. But remember if you use an example letter change things to make it your own letter. ;-)
