Well, you can't use any old rock--you need a sharpening stone. It sometimes comes with a kit with instructions. First see if it's a wet or dry stone. If it's a wet stone, get the stone a little damp (some people spit on it) and rub the moisture in a bit. Hold the stone in front of your body with the wide-side flat and the length of it perpendicular to your body. Then, keeping your knife blade at less than a 45-degree angle, drag it across the stone away from you and away from other people. You'll need to apply constant, somewhat firm pressure. Do this several times on both sides of the knife. Be sure to do it away from other people and to sharpen (drag) both sides of the knife an equal number of times. AND be sure to keep the fingers of your hand holding the stone out of the blade's way!
Or you can go to your local sporting goods/outdoor store (or some Walmarts) and buy a diamond sharpener for 7 bucks or so and do the same thing A LOT quicker. (And with no water or spit.)
