You need to clarify a couple of things in order to receive good answers. "Federal poverty line" as in which federation? (Which country?). This forum is read around the world.

Poverty as in... having cable tv, carpeting, air conditioning, family pets, video games, clothes, shoes, school, school breakfast and lunch program, free clinics, social security, and just barely scraping by due to unfortunate, unforseen circumstances? In the USA, if that's what you mean, this is the typical "poverty" picture, according to the US Census Bureau's latest fact-finding.

Or, poverty as in, other people making the same amount with the same living expenses are able to make it, and have small savings, whilst their peers do not "make it" due to bad money habits or personal habits?

Which type of poverty do you mean?

To the first poster, most do have jobs. You can work and live under the poverty line. We are a family of 5, my husband has always worked, never not had a job, but live under poverty line... In Michigan it is IMPOSSIBLE to find a job. He has looked and looked, has college and everything... Impossible!

It is actually an "IQ" line, and not a "poverty line". Dumb people are poor, unless they inherit Hilton Hotel money, and smart people have the money. The government tries to mandate money for poor/dumb people and it will never work. They just spend/waste the money and the cycle of stupidity continues from generation to generation.
