My ISP, time warner, will not give me the DNS server addresses in order for me to set up a static ip so i can forward ports on my new router. Is there any way to get around this? I am losing functionality with this router as is because i cannot forward specific ports to make software run better.

I was told by time warner that attempting to set up a static ip on a residential account was against the service terms and they gave me a link but i didnt see anything in there about static ip's.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Well, i was just following the steps from portforward.com on how to set up a static ip address on your computer, but it says i need the DNS addresses from my isp becuase my router is acting at proxy and blocking me access to the real DNS address. Thats why i contacted time warner and thats when they told me i cant have access to that information without an upgrade.

Is there another way to setup a static ip without this information??

Thanks

if you are looking for a "static" address you might want to look into dynamic addressing
the software is free and will give you the same domain name even if your ip changes.

www.myipaddress.net
some routers like linksys have this functionality built into the router.

Usually ISP's will give you a static IP but they charge for it. its nothing to do with a residential or commercial account, I guess you need to speak to another person from time warner and directly ask him to assin you a static IP for your office related work or something like that.

You dont need a static IP just for port forwarding anyway, its only needed if you need outsiders to know where to find you. for instance if you want a VPN connection to be setup then you would need a static IP. It depends on the router settings to forward all the incoming packets to specific ports.

You do not need a static ISP IP address. You need to set your computer to have a static IP address...this can be done in the router setup. Then you can forward the ports to that IP address and it will never change.

I have Time Warner, and I have a static external IP address. It is perhaps not technically static, but if it's DHCP, it always gets assigned the same one.

The guy above is right for Port Triggering to work, but some applications, such as DC++, also demand a static external IP.
