Up until Big Trouble, Carpenter had a steady team on his movies, including Debra Hill. Is this why all his films since then sucked?

I don't think they've all sucked, although I agree he has made more than his share of bad films. My guess is that probably had more passion for his ideas earlier in his career. Now that he's achieved some measure of success, he might be trying to second guess what will be popular instead of just following his heart.

It's called getting old I guess… the passion, fire and creativity of youth does eventually dwindle. He still has something going for him - his Masters of Horror episode "Cigarette Burns" was pretty sweet.

Stlll if he only made The Thing and every other film he made sucked he'd still be deserving of ledgendary status!
