I read a story about this kid who got a job with one of the big security firms because he actually hacked his way into the system and then offered the company a fix to his hack... But lets be honest how often does that happen? and when a job comes open at a company what will you put on your resume? I have no degree but I have mad skills?

I am not saying its impossible because a lot of the skills that programmers learn, they learn when they are young while just playing with their computer or on the net but play it safe get your degree to go along with your skills...

No, but it helps
There is a very competent programmer in our Dev team who 'boasts' that he never got any educational qualifications higher than an A level, but that is a very rare case of someone who has worked his way up the ladder via several related disciplines.
With a degree, you are more likely to get an entry level position closer to the position you want

Im in the business so trust me on this. The answer is unequivocally no.

Certifications and hands on experience are more heavily desired than degree's- almost without exception. Microsoft certs like the MCSD or MCAD are the way to go.

good luck

Nope, and I'm living proof. You just have to be darn good at what you do and be able to prove it.
