You are exactly right about norton - half of the time loading it causes more problems than it can fix (especially considering there are tons of free virus scan programs, and once you identify what you have, there are tons of free instructions or little programs for fixing nearly any problem.
Start by shutting down, and booting into safe mode (usually by pressing F8 while it boots). This will keep all the garbage from starting up, and give you a place to start. Uninstall norton first - and see if there is anything else starting up automatically that you can kill.
Once you get it to where it will boot and run - bring up processes again, make a list, and then search for each item online for instructions on if and how to remove it. You should also run scandisk and defrag on your harddrive. Get adaware personal for free from lavasoft.com, update it and run a full scan.
Finally, you might want to get a free registry scanner/fixer to clean out any junk.
Then be really careful in the future what you click on, and install on your machine.

You seem to have a lot of programs starting by themselves when windows boots up. To stop these from starting go to Start===>Run===>type in "msconfig" in the box and click OK. The System configuration utility will open. Click the startup tab on top. A list of programs will open up. All those with check marks are starting when windows boots. Uncheck those you do not need (leave those associated with your antivirus and firewall checked) If you're not sure what each one does a search on the net will tell you. When you are done click apply and then ok. It will tell you to restart your PC. When windows boots up again a box will appear saying you changed some settings. Check the box in the lower left corner so the box will not appear every time you start windows. It's best you run a decent spyware program like ad-aware or spybot search & destroy to make sure no spyware is running in the background also.

The exact same thing happened to me a while ago. You probably have a lot of virus files on your computer. (Maybe you download alot of music or videos?) Anyway, you should go online and find a free virus scan (Spybot is good) and get rid of all of those files. This can take a while, but the difference you will see in your computer's performance is unbelievable.

well lets see. its probably not coming up as a task, so when you go to the task manager and got the process manager heres what you do. select the msinfo.32.exe and end the process. hopefully this wont kill your operating system. also try defragmenting you hard drive, this will help you run faster. right click my computer and select manage in the roll down menu. you should see a disk defragment icon. select it and just defrag the drive. that should help alot.

Use that to scan for and remove most crap out there. Make sure to follow it's instructions.
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Use that to check for viruses. It is an online scanner, so no download needed, other than the ActiveX for Internet Explorer.

you can dowload this thing from microsoft called windows defender... link : http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx download it then run a FULL (you have to click on the arrow next to scan to do a full one) system scan.... that should help some... then on windows defenders tool page (on the program) click on software explorer. this tells you all of the programs that run on you computer at start up and currently. just find the programs you dont want and it lets you disable them or delete them....
