You will feel cramping in a way you've never felt it before. Mentral cramps are pretty distinctive. They occur in your lower abdomen. Also, mood swings and changes in appetite are also a sign. All women are different though. You might have barely any cramps, but become very moody, so you could just get really crampy.
You will most likely spot at first, and it may be brown in color. A few days into your flow, it will be more red, and then brown again toward the end.
Know that during your first two years, your periods won't be regular. You could get it, and then not have it again for a few months. That's totally normal.
Just stock up on midol, pads and tampons, and don't be shy about asking your mom questions :)

It's different for every woman - a lot of us get moody both from hormones and from the discomfort of cramping, a lot of us crave chocolate. I generally get a bad ache in my lower back.
Some women (like my sister and mother) luck out - their bodies are regular enough that they know it's time (within a couple of days, anyway) just by looking at the calendar, and they don't have to fight through the moodiness - they don't cramp or get cranky!
