I plan to go to Reno & Lake Tahoe on the next trip and was wondering if it matters wherer we stay? Are they close enough just to go back and forth? Thanks much.

It's much less expensive to stay in Reno than it is to stay in Tahoe. It takes about 45 minutes to get to South Lake Tahoe if you take Mt Rose highway. Another nice thing about being in Reno at night is that there is a lot more to do since it's a 24 hour town. Tahoe doesn't have much of a night life but it's beautiful. If you do decide to stay in Tahoe, we really liked staying at Inn by the Lake. The staff was wonderful, the rooms were nice, the area is beautiful, it's within walking distance of the casinos, movie theater, shops and is right across the street from the lake.

Rates in Reno are cheaper and it takes aprox one hour to get to Tahoe. Lots of casinos in Reno. The Hilton is alright. Tahoe is beautiful and would recomend staying in south lake tahoe if you can afford it Ceasars or Harrahs. In north lake tahoe there are some small casinos near the border try the Cal Neva it is the oldest casino in Nevada when are you going? Spring should be fairly affordable and summer higher. You will be much happier in Tahoe than Reno. They are really too far apart even though that is where the airport is. You should rent a car or you can take a shuttle bus to the tahoe area.

When I go to Reno, I stay in Reno. It is more expensive in Tahoe. Not that it makes any difference, you will loose the money anyway, either at the casinos or being comfortable with a better view at Tahoe.

Reno is closer to the airport, but Tahoe does have very good facilities and is very beautiful. I assume you are going to ski? If so, North Star is a good place, about 30 mins drive from South Lake Tahoe.
Hope this brief info helps!

Lake Tahoe is very pretty! We would go every November when I was a kid.
I haven't ever stayed in Reno so I can't tell you about that.

with regards to the snow situations: in assessment to, say Utah, you could especially plenty assume the West Coast snow to be moist and heavy. And it hardpacks (compressed, ice like features) with out delay using climate being sunny, overcast, sunny, overcast, etc. we are going to get layers of recent snow that turn to hardpack and then extra comfortable, moist snow on proper of that, and lower back... that's why they're constantly making snow and grading the snow early mornings. The extra north you bypass, from southern California, the extra those layers are deeper. needless to say using blizzard is extra commonplace. using this, you do no longer want large sharp edges on your kit in view which you will tend to seize each and every of the hardpack's bumps that lie below as you wreck interior the direction of the better new snow and hit the hardpack under. even nevertheless a stable wax is obligatory to maintain you moving with out delay. the speedier you progression, the fewer probability to hit hitched or affected by the hardpack snow. various the suited "snow" in California is at great Mountain. It has fluffy, much less moist high quality. After a stable blizzard, skiers are knee deep in clean, air like snow it rather is basic to circulate in and only basic relaxing.

Both are nice, but very different scenery. They are less than an hours ride apart
