Marketing techniques are the techniques used by corporations, companies or individuals to market products or services. These can be broken into two categories: online and offline.
Online marketing breaks down into a few basic components, which are:
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) - the art of designing and creating websites, and then promoting and getting links in such a way as to make it rank for certain terms in the natural listings in the search engines, like the left hand listings on Google
Pay Per Click (PPC) - paid, or sponsored listings in search engines. Better written advert copy, more budget allocated per click and better conversions all affect how highly the advert ranks. An example of these is the right hand listings in Google.
Permission eMail Marketing - the sending of solicited (where the reciever has given consent to be emailed) email, advertising offers, or simply giving information. Newsletters and to an extent, RSS feeds fall into this category.
PR Copy Distribution - distributing press releases and marketable copy online. Includes press packs, articles, information packs, ebooks and ezines.
Offline marketing has many methods, such as TV adverts, radio advertising, billboards, adverts on buses, TV/radio interviews, cinema advertising, product placement... There are thousands of methods, so I won't be listing them all here. However, if you check out the links bit below, you'll find more information there.
There are also some methods which cross over, such as viral adverts, where something travels by word of mouth, video adverts, which can be put up also on YouTube and MySpace videos, interviews broadcast online and offline, and distributed as PodCast. In fact, increasingly we're seeing offline and more traditional media marketing and advertising systems become adapted to and integrated with online systems. A good example is the Apple Mac vs Windows adverts, or the Snakes on a Plane marketing push.
Looking to the future, we'll see more and more integration, as marketing techniques becomes more about engagement with brand, rather than traditional sales pushes, creating new jobs and industries within the marketing sector.

People have mentioned some practicalities (what to do), but the theory of marketing is satisfying the 4 P's (product, price, promotion and place) or there are 7's for service organisations.
Basically these mean understanding your product/services and matching what you do, with what the customer really wants (e..g in transport industry as henry ford is reputed to said - if I asked the customer what they wanted - id have built a faster horse!). there ars some well founded techniques that mean we know is easier to keep a customer than find one, and its easier to sell more to an existing customer than find an entirely new customer! That some techniques!

Marketing in its widest sense includes -
the Product - getting products right for your target market, branding, including development, testing and tweaking.
the Place/Distribution - how you sell your products to your consumers. Could include large sales forces, online or dealers etc.
the Pricing strategies employed
the Promotion elements - advertising, communications, positioning, etc.
More recently organisations People have been included, as a key element of marketing too.
Within these elements there are then going to be a range of marketing techniques deployed, such as competive analysis, detailed research into consumers needs allowing more effective product development, advertising and various marketing communications strategies.
There would always be a key decision made over new developments, to ensure that there is no adverse negative effect upon the global image values etc. The business also needs to understand its financial impact tp it, and allocation of funding for research and development would need to be secured and managed, as would all budgets for products etc.
In reality, we're talking about understanding customer's needs and fulfilling them with appropriate products, where there is profitable opportunity. It's then down to controlling all of the various strands of marketing and other internal business activities and processes to get revenue forecasts met with sufficient profitability.
Products have lifecycles and we mostly know of the newer products, many older ones may simply sit alongside quietly, generating an even, dependable source of revenue. When they are no longer required, they are withdrawn, usually with less fanfare than when they're launched. Again, this falls within overall product marketing and management responsibilities.
All of the above will be taken in the context of a higher level corporate strategy, to ensure everything fits the brand image etc. and that resources are or will be financed to appropriate levels.
Hope these thoughts help. There is an awful lot more to marketing than just sales and advertising and it's a fun challenging environment where you get to meet people in most of the organisation, plus suppliers etc.
Good luck! Rob
