You can never catch to your sleep.. Once you lose it, its gone!
Sleep deprivation causes (among many other really nasty things) irritability, forgetfulness, headache, and a major reduction your ability to concentrate. Furthermore, it can cause really nasty depression..... Sleep deprivation can also be dramatically detrimental to your judgement and ability to make decisions. It's blamed for about 200,00 traffic accidents every year, and it has been noted as a major factor in the accidents with the Exxon Valdez, Three Mile Island, and the Challenger space shuttle.
If you are suffering from sleep deprivation, try to rearrange your schedule to allow you a little more sleep. Ensure your sleeping place is a restful one with a comfortable mattress, good air circulation and protection from unwanted light and noise.
If practicable, have a short sleep during the afternoon (between 2pm and 6pm is best, as the body is at a naturally low ebb during this time).

I am well into sr. years---have slept about 4 1/2 hours for years---still maintain a decent IQ, some people require more sleep than others---if you are taking pills to stay awake then you have a problem. Go into a room that is dark, no TV no sound, and try to sleep, or read a book and see if that helps, change your place to sleep, from bed to couch or where ever. The pills indicate a problem that needs to be addressed.

Without adequate sleep the cells of the living body do not get the opportunity to reggerate and repair. Primary example, when you lay in the bed for a slumber, the uniplanar position allows for the majority of the blood vessels to lay on the same axis allowings for even distribution of gravity and maximum blood flow. This allows for adequate cirulation and greater energy avilability for your day.

Your body needs time to rest and repair itself. Although some people can function at this level, for long term it will catch up, by feeling run-down and lack of energy. You may need to see a physician.

Not good actually.
Caffeine can cause lung and kidney issues, especially the pills. Addiction can even worsen the side effects you may suffer.
Getting less sleep will cause stress, which often has many side effects such as anger, frustration, sick, frequent sickness, balding, diahrea, nausea, vomiting.
Also, it has been proven to shorten your life span.
