I have a large collection of music on my desktop computer (about 50 to 60 GB )

i used ot have it in a folder in my documents, under files stored on this computer, on the My Computer menu.

But i recently moved it to local disk (C:) under Hard Disk Drives.

Since i've moved it things seem kinda slower and the computer doesn't seem to run as fast and smoothly as before, but maybe it's just a coincidence.

Does where I store my music have any effect on the computer? and if so, where's the best place to keep it.

Thank you in advance, I'm not to bright when it come to computers and appreciate the help.

I doubt moving the files made the difference in itself. Rather, the likely situation is that as a result of a large file move, the hard drive has become heavily fragmented. Try running Defrag and see if it helps.

Another situation may be that the hard drive is becoming too filled, which would affect the virtual memory (virtual memory uses a portion of the hard drive). You may want to see about running Disk Cleanup and otherwise deleting files you no longer need (remember to empty Recycle Bin).

Joemammy also has a good point. Sometimes when one thinks they are moving files they are simply copying them (I've done it myself a few too many times).

It would be better to store your files in a folder inside of the C: drive. If you just place all of the files into the "root" (the C drive with no folder) Your computer is going to end up searching through all of those files way too often when it is looking for an operating system file that is supposed to be stored in the root of the C drive.
make a folder---> name it whatever you like and move your music into that folder.

Erik is on the right track here. When I purchased my new 160 gig external drive and transfereed all my music to it I inadvertantly transferred some unintention files also.In haste I transferred everything back to the C drive and realized what I had done wrong so had to transfer all the music to the new ex drive again(w/o the other unintentional files). Now my computer slowed to a crawl and there were huge chuks of fragmentation when I went to do the defrag.Had to get the freeware progral by Auslogics from Cnet ,install and defragged and it worked wonders. The built in windows defragger was useless in this case.A leeson well worth learning.

When it was stored in 'my documents' it was already on the C:\ drive. You just move it from one folder to another.

Check and see if you actually moved the songs out of the old folder (you might have copied them, and now your hard drive is filling up).

Search for all .mp3 files on your computer and see if a duplicate set pops up - and you will know you need to get rid of one.

Otherwise, you might still need to see how much room is left on the drive, and maybe uninstall some programs or delete some unnecessary stuff.

Not really, unless you are running out of free space on your C: drive. You might want to perform a defrag on the drive.
