My goldfish is in a tank that is too small...i can't get a bigger one since i dont have the space. She is gasping for oxygen (see other questions) and i need to do something. I figured that i could bring her back to petco where there will be a filter and a bigger tank. I have grew greatly attached to the goldfish, but i don't wanna see her suffer. What should i do?

definitely take her back, although i'd find a smaller independent fish store, as they would be more likely to accept a fish. I'd think you'd want to do this more if you're attached, because in a small tank you'd really see alot of suffering, even with tons of work on your part. there are many fish that do well in somewhat small tanks, so do some research and find a fish that you know will do well in your situation before you buy another.

visit this link, and i'd say go straight into the freshwater newbie forum. there are TONS of suggestions for what to keep in small tanks with lists of what you would need to make it work!
even a tiny tank of invertebrates (snails, shrimp) can be alot of fun with very little bio-load.

just be sure that NOT keeping a goldie in a small tank is doing the right thing.

For emergencies, you MUST CHANGE THE WATER. In clean, new, cold water, don't forget to add drops of chemical for the water (neutralizes chlorine and other toxins for your fish). As long as you change the water *every other day* (because your tank is too small for a filter or larger quantities of oxygen in the water). It is very hard to do so often, please consider a better home for your fish.

Yes, you need to return her or take her to another store and explain that you just don't have room for her anymore. A small pet shop is more likely to give you some credit in the store for her than petco.

Do you have a friend who would be willing to "adopt" her from you? That would be my first recomendation. Alot of times places like petco wont take them back for the fear of the health of their own fish and they tend to not like to have to do any extra work when it comes to taking care of them. If you want to take it, see if a private pet store would be willing to take her in as a store pet or to eventually sell. They tend to have alot more compasion for fish and their business since they own it and aren't just employed.

EDIT:
Do you think you have room for a 5 gallon? They aren't that much bigger than a 2.5 gallon. If you have just that one fish then she could probably do pretty well in a 5 gallon for awhile.
At least until she reaches her full size, which should take a little while.

Take her back, she'll find a nice home.

you could maybe put a small airstone in the aquarium.
