Here's what you should do.
1st, don't waste your time with AVG, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they free. They are NOT good.
2nd, You need some of the best software out there. Norton Systemworks is very good. That's the only good software from Norton. I wouldn't recommend Norton Internet security, its not that great. Now the best software you should get is Spysweeper with Anti-virus, this software is too good and gets better everyday. It blocks over 170,600 threats. No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. It catches everything. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none.
3rd, after you install and update the software, since its in your system you will have to turn off system restore and then go into safe mode and run the scan and eliminate the virus. then after removal, reboot and turn system restore back on.
4th, (Optional) I recommend a Firewall from Zone Alarm, their free version is so good. Or you can buy their Pro version, but the free version will do more than the job.
5th, any probs during or after you do all this, send me an e-mail.

EZ Antivirus is a decent free solution.
If you haven't gotten your free copy yet you can download it here. http://home3.ca.com/SubscriptCenter/MSTrialRegistration.aspx It is free and good for a year of free updates before you have to buy. If you have already used this you can't use it again, if you haven't, I recommend installing it and doing a full system scan. You do have to have a valid email address but they really don't send much spam so go ahead and give them your valid primary email or create a new one at hotmail or yahoo and use that one, your choice....

If you can not access the internet or install any antivirus due to the infection... sysclean can be downloaded on an un-infected pc and copied to a directory on your computer. Nothing is actually installed using sysclean so it can work when other solutions won't.

You can download these two files from trend micro...

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/viruspattern.asp
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/sysclean.com

If you use sysclean Just make sure the sysclean.com file and the unzipped virus pattern files are in the same directory on your computer. Then just double click the sysclean.com and let it find and remove viruses. One note, if you are using ME or XP you need to turn off system restore otherwise the virus will probably not be removed. If you get a message stating that the virus could not be removed because the file is in use you may need to boot your computer in safe mode and re-run the system cleaner.

These solutions are free and I have used them with much success on numerous occasions

There are no guarantees that the virus will be removed using these methods it kind of depends. As a last resort you can restore your system using your restore discs or restore partition on your hard drive.

Best of luck.

Here's a great review of the "top ten" virus scanners.
http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
If you can pay, get one of the best ones. Great free ones are AVG, or my fav AVAST. The links to their web sites is at the review site.

If you install a virus scanner now, it MIGHT fix the problem, maybe not. Do it and see.

If you still have the virus, you'll need to copy any of you music and data files to CD, then rebuild your system. If you aren't comfortable with this, get a good geek friend to help as it's not that hard.

ALSO install the free Microsoft Defender. This is a free spyware removal program that could be part of your problem!

Go to CNET.com and look for the downloads available (lower left portion). These offer both free and at cost anti-virus, spyware, malware programs. You will find ratings for each product.
I personally run AVG and AntiVir. Both are programmed to run daily, one in the early morning, the other late at night. They come with daily updates and will not allow any file with a virus potential to run. With the addition of Adaware and SpyBot (also free) you can control your systems vulnerability. Also check the status of your Firewall. Good Luck.

Go to google. Type 'avast'

- its a free anti virus that is comparible with all other pay virus products.

- also look into Adadware (free)... Althought try AVast First!

- After installing - Opt to DO A BOOT SCAN - this will scan for viruses before they can load and hide -

----This WILL WORK!
