i am new at this and can do it from my playlist but cannot figure out how to get them off my I-pod

deleting them from your playlist only gets them off your playlist - they are still in the main music library
you have to delete songs from the main music library in iTunes, then re-sync your iPod to your computer.
in your main music library, just drag the songs you dont want to the trash.

You just delete them from your iPod libary and then plug in your iPod and let in sync again.

in iTunes, once you have it sync'd up, you can select your iPod's library and delete what you don't want....

blow up the ipod and you will no longer hear music!!
