I want to name my baby Dorothy Michelle. After my grandmother and my middle name. Everyone says no because that is outdated and everyone will call her Dottie. What should I do? What your opinions?

It does sound a bit dated but this is your baby. I think its lovely that you want to honor your grandmother and if that's what you feel is right, then you should follow your heart. I think a little girl nicknamed Dottie would be sweet, its similar to Sadie and other names popular right now.

I like Dottie more than Dorothy. It's sounds cute. I had a friend who named her baby Doris Ann after her grandmother and NO ONE likes it. I think it's bad for the child. Although, I do admire you for wanting to honor your grandmother. Have you ever thought about three names for your baby? A lot of people are doing that now. Maybe a more modern name for the first name and follow with Dorothy-Michelle. Dorrey Michelle is also very cute. You should go with Dorrie (or Dorrey), it's just too cute!!!

While it's a perfectly nice name I do agree that Dorothy is a bit outdated/old-fashioned and your daughter would probably be called Dot or Dottie by alot of people. If you can deal with that, then use it anyway. If you insist enough that she's called by her full name, hopefully most people will get the hint and call her Dorothy.

Have you considered Dorothea? I like it better than Dorothy, it sounds a bit more updated and you'd still be honoring your grandma with a name similar to hers.

I think Dorothy will be fine when she gets older. I like Dottie or Dot as a nick name when she is small. If you do not want her called this just tell people. I've done this my whole life. I prefer to be called by my first and middle names together... example- Mary Beth, not Mary.

Aw i think that is a sweet name for a baby girl. Alot of old fashioned names are making a comeback. Just think, 'Dorothy' will be unique to your little girl where everyone else has trendy names. It is special that you can remember your grandmother everytime you look at the part of you you will love so dearly.I think when people look at your little girl and ask what her name is and you say 'Dorothy Michelle' they wont think of old fashioned times but actually see it as 'hey, this little baby is the future and has meaning to her name!'.

My daughter is named Catharine Rose. My partner and me had loads of names picked out for her before she was born butnothing rung special. When we looked at her, we just knew it suited her. At first my family werent expecting that and thought it could have been a little dated, but it was what mattered to me and my partner. We have people coming up to us these days and saying what a beautiful name it is and it makes me proud.

It is about what is made by you and what is in your heart to make your baby unique and special to you. Plus i think your grandmother would be really proud!

P.s. I think there are worse shortenings a name can have like for e.g 'Tito' may be shortened to something rather inappropriate. I always call my daughter by her full name and if anyone shortens it i dont really bother as Catharine knows what her proper name is and that is all that matters. :)

awww I think Dottie could be REALLY cute for a little girl. As she gets older she can choose to go by Dot, Dorothy, Dottie or even Michelle. I think it's a great strong name that a child can grow with...if you love the name...I say go for it! I want to call mine Addy, Hattie or Lottie for a nickname

Give her that name if that's what YOU want...
If you keep calling her Dorothy and not Dottie than other people may do the same.

I had a friend Dorothy who was a professional model. We'd work together and she was beautiful inside as well. You could always used Dori as a nickname, if you don't want to call her Dorothy.....and to prevent Dottie.
