i got a cheap compaq laptop from Staples. Less than $500 on sale. It's perfectly fine for web, email, word processing. Make sure it has at least 512MB and wifi. Most cheap laptops do not come with a DVD burner. 1 year warrenty.
I would not get refurbished laptop. Warrenty is usually shorter, and it is more likely to break.

Depends.
Dell has them for about $600 (plus tax). But don't expect to be too impressed.
Instead of getting a more expensive model though - you can upgrade some of the things on the $600 one and make a pretty nice machine. Get an AMD Turion processor and at least 1 gig of ram (especially now that they are shipping them out with Windows Vista on them).

It really depends what your using a laptop for.
If you want something just for school, try finding a refurbished laptop from Dell, HP or www.ubid.com. These can cost around $400-1000
If you need something for gaming, I would try finding a high-end computer, once again check out HP or Sony. These computers can cost about $1000-3000
If you want a computer to last a long time, try to find something that is pretty nice, from Sony, HP or any of those mainstream companies. Try to avoid Dell, they use really cheap parts and their computers burn out really fast. These computers go around $1000

There are many ways to answer this. I have gotten laptops (used) for clients for as low as $200. It all depends on what you are going to use it for. You can get new laptops ranging from $399.00 to over $2,000.00. Again, it all depends on how much you want to spend and what you need it for.
Here are a couple of good links to look for used laptops.

Good luck, hope I helped

Depends on if you want a new one or used. I recently asked around to friends if they knew of a good used laptop and someone was upgrading and sold me his used HP Omnibook laptop for three hundred dollars. Great deal, great laptop.
