Why do People from Different Regions have different Accents. Take Northern and Southern For instance?

It's a sort of dialect... At least in America you all speak English and only the accent is different...
Here in Belgium, we have a group of people who speak Flemish, a group who speaks French and a group who speaks German.
In the Flemish group people speak a dialect from the region they were brought up in, and it's very hard to understand each others dialect when you come from 2 different regions...
We have different dialect words which are so specific that it is possible that a word is used only in a certain town and not in the neighboring one...

because different groups of people settled in different parts of the country, like many germans and dutch settled in PA, wisconsin, Minnesota, while many spanish, italian, irish, etch settled in NY, (where i'm from)
