Depends on the percussion instrument. Percussion instruments have long been used to mark time and tempo in music, so that the players of other instruments are less unlikely to be playing ahead of or behind the rest of their section. But, as there are literally thousands of different kinds of percussive instruments, that is not the only role they play. Some percussives, like xylophones, pianos, and tympanni, are capable of playing notes just like most other instruments, although their notes are incapable of being sustained like a horn or a woodwind or a fingered string, but they offer the potential of allowing a single player to perform a solo with multiple harmonics, which those other instruments just plain do not do.
So, marking time, marking tempo, unsustained melodics, and single player harmonics.

A percussion instrument is any object that produces a sound by being struck with an implement, shaken, rubbed, scraped, or by any other action which sets the object into vibration. The term usually applies to an object used in a rhythmic context with musical intent. As for the "role" of percussion instruments well, they make music!!

In most cases, the percussion instruments are vital to help keeping the band in time, as well as filling out the sound, with a driving beat.

Rythm is their first task... but they are so much more... the xylophone is a percussion instrument, as are tambours and tin drums in reggae and such. virtually anything that gets "hit with a stick" is a percussion instrument.

depends on the type of music but look at the drum for instance-without one in most popular music, the beat wouldn't be clear. As with classical music it adds to the ambiance and the rhythmic aspects of the music
