Yes, conferences are not only for grades. I enjoy meeting the parents and knowing how they are. This helps me teach their child in the classroom. For the students who are making straight A's, we discuss ways to challenge them in the classroom and at home. We also discuss how they are socially and behaviorally. Students also like their parents to come. It shows that mom and dad still care about what they are doing. If those parents stop coming, grades will drop in order to receive their attention. So, yes, please attend your child's conference! If time is a factor, at least send an email or call to check up on things. Let your child know you did it!

It's a shame that the parents of the straight A students are the most reliable ones to show up for a conference. I still think they should. For one, it's nice for teachers to conference with parents and have NO difficulty finding something positive to say. It's also important that children see their parents' involvement in their education as having a direct link to their success. One reason I really like conferencing with these parents is because they often share concerns their children have that they're not expressing in the classroom. These kids are often so used to doing what they're told that they don't think to tell their teacher when they're unhappy with a situation. There's also more to education than academic grades. A child's social development is just as important, so discussing a child's overall performance in school is still crucial.

i think they should. just because the student excels academically, there might be other social questions or concerns that need to be addressed: face it, students tend to ostracize those who do very well. perhaps there are concerns about whether the student is being challenged enough by the material... are advanced classes in order? and the student might have some concerns that only the teacher knows, or only the parents. this is an ideal time to discuss those.
finally, it shows the student that his or her parents take an active interest in their education by attending conferences, helping to insure continued educational excellence.

Yes, by all means, attend. Parent - teacher conferences are more than grades. Many times it is to show student accomplishments by showcasing their works which earned them their A's. You will get to know the teacher, their expectations, their teaching philosophies, etc. I cannot urge you enough, GO!

It is usually the parents of the A and B students that I see at conferences, Either way, it's always important to keep the lines of communication open and to reinforce this mid-year. It gives me a chance to share all the wonderful things about my students that are beyond the realm of grades. It also give me a chance to talk with parents about their children's options for classes next year.

By still attending, it shows that you're an active, concerned parent.
Gives your child support, as well.
