My sister woke me up at 1 am last night freaking out because someone sent her an email with pictures of a car crash. This porsh was demolished and the girl inside was unidentifiable. In 2 words.....skull crushed. She was going about 100 mph.
This may be a dumb question but she's really messed up by this picture and can't stop thinking about it. She keeps asking me what should she do to stop thinking about it. She even drove 15 miles under the speed limit all the way to work this morning. I told her to talk about something else and do things to keep her mind off of it. She said she couldn't stop thinking about it.
Any suggestions on what to tell her to stop freaking out? Her nerves are shot. She's sick to her stomach. She shouldn't have looked. She knew she couldn't handle it before she even saw the entire picture but looked anyway.

Don't think she drove to wrecklessly before. She got a few speeding tickets but not going that fast.
She knows that it's a learning experience. That's why the person sent it to her. But the person didn't warn her how bad the picture was.
Is it weird it's not affecting me much? I'm sure if I was on the scene of that it would but just looknig at the picture it doesn't effect me much. I'm interested in being a crime scene photographer. Wonder if I could actually handle scenes like that in person.....

Tell her to just think of something else the millisecond she thinks of the picture. Just to block it out. When she catches herself thinking of it, tell her to change thoughts or to start singing. Eventually though, she will block it out and never think about it again.

Did your sister used to drive a bit reckless before she saw the picture? If so, maybe the picture kind of acted as a wake up call that she needs to be careful and more responsible behind the wheel. It is possible that another person's misfortune is going to benefit your sister in the end. A lot of people think they are invincible and maybe this made your sister realize that she is not and bad things do happen. Talk with her as if it is a learning experience. Not only to be careful but to appreciate life and live each day to it's fullest. She should eventually calm down but if this continues to affect her after a couple of weeks, then she may need to speak with someone.

Most likely these feelings will fade. (If they don't do so significantly in the next few days, she should talk to a therapist.)

Distracting herself is good.

As for you, it's more common to NOT be that freaked out.

What happens (with medical people and others who routinely see really horrific stuff) is, you get used to it with repetition.

So if you go for the gig you describe, expect to be sickened and such at first, but the more of them you see, the less shocking they are to you.

Tell her that this things that are posted on the net are Paint-shopped and it probably wasn't real. Even though we know different may be just knowing that the photo was possibly doctored it may help her get over it...
