For a DVR to replace an HD digital cable box needs the following

* Digital HD TV Tuner (Usually referred to as NTSC/ATSC/QAM)
* CableCard slot (allows you to get a Cablecard from your cable provider and see scrambled channels)

So, if your DVR has the above, you are all set.

All in all, it may be simpler to rent a set-top box/DVR from your cable provider unless you really want to own a particular model.

Yes the HD DVR will be used in place of the HD digital cable box. If you go with the HD Tivo box, then you would get cable cards from your cable company, and then you wouldn't need your HD cable box. You also wouldn't need to pay the fee for your HD Cable box (~ $5 per month I think) as HD is included with the cable cards..

No - think of a DVR as a VHS recorder that doesn't need tape. It is simply a box with a hard drive used to record video & audio.

Your cable box is required to feed the different HD channels to your TV.
