If a business gets an "F" from them, and has a ton of complaints, do they actually do anything like report them to some legal agency, or are they just a ratings-only organization? I have a problem with a glass company, and they have an F rating from the BBB, and lots of complaints similar to mine.

No the BBB cannot do anything to a company. They are more of a reporting agency and they notify customers of complaints in hopes of helping you get your money back. But they are not a government agency.

If you want results you should file a complaint with the Attorney Generals office. They have the right to shut down a business.

all they do is post it on the Internet for prospective customers to look up .. Or if a person wants to get an air / heating unit put in their home, or business, they might look int the yellow pages. Then they would pick a company .. They could look it up on the net. Or call the BBB and ask about the said business. If the business has complaints more than likely the consumer will not use that company. I think that's about the extent of it.

The BBB is an organization that has outlived its usefulness, in my opinion. In the old days before the Internet, it served as a nice ratings agency.

I got "reported" to the BBB once and they very politely asked for my side of the story. I gave it, furnished documentation supporting my case, and was told that I would not be listed as a company with "bad business practices."

However, I then got calls from them for MONTHS asking me to join the BBB for a couple hundred dollars a year. I asked what benefits it would give me, and really the only thing they said was that I would be identified by them as a "participating business in good standing with the BBB."

I said No Thanks, and continue to operate my company ethically on my own.

The BBB does very little. The worst they can do a business is to post a rating on their web site. The can kick out members, but that's really not much of a punishment for most companies.

Only if they have first hand knowledge of an actual (and serious) crime will they report it.

Basically, the BBB is worthless. They sometimes even refuse to put, on their web site, true information about companies. They prefer to side with the company.

I'm not sure to the extent of their reporting or grading, however I've never known of the BBB to actually "remove" a business from operating but I would think they are reported to a higher authority for illegal activities.
