So far I've been able to talk to a plethora of job recruiters but have had absolutely no (nada, nil, zilch, zero) interviews with actual companies.

Is it just me or is this recruiter thing a waste of my gas money and lots of time ? I'm absolutely sure there's someone out there who could use my skills, I just can't seem to get in their front door through a recruiter...they're usesless.

I will NEVER lie my way into a job.

I have friends who trust in me -- I didn't ask for their trust, they gave it to me when they thought I deserved it -- I earned it -- I am not willing to break that bond of professinalism for any reason.

Military motto -- Integrity is everything.

Yeah, agencies are a pain in the neck. The key is to find a few good ones and stick with them, call them, email, let them know youre still looking; basically hassle them so youre top of the list when something comes in.

I have no idea why so many agencies rush you into signing on with them and then never talk to you again. I suspect they have aquota for signing candidates.

You've already gotten a lot of very good advice here.

I totally agree that you should continue to deal with recruiters, but this shouldn't be your only path. I can only be so helpful without knowing your field, but keep in mind that some recruiters have better placement rates than others. Inquire about this when you schedule your interview/assessment with them on the phone or via the web.

Additionally, from personal experience, I have discovered that hobnobbing with recruiters REALLY helps to further your cause. Get to know "your" recruiter. Send notes, emails, etc. Call weekly to inquire about new openings and make your conversation more light than aggressive.

Your objective should be to get them to like you enough to want to see you working. In turn, they may offer a little more than the usual amount of experience or some worthwhile advice.

Also, take a second look at your resume. Are you making it hard for them to find you work?

Good luck!

Using a recruiter is one avenue of a job search, but the key is using a multi-pronged approach. You need to market a product (you.) You can't just rely on TV ads - you need print ads, words of mouth, direct mail, etc.

Keep talking to recruiters, but use other approaches as well - apply directly for jobs via a company's online career center and/or a job posting board like monster.com. Network with fellow alums, your school's career center, church groups, friends, relatives, former colleagues, etc. Join a local networking group, professional organization, or community service group (like Rotary or Kiwanis - often attended by local business leaders.) Use a variety of approaches to get you to your goal.

Good luck!

Job recruiters are in the business to sell people. I am sure your skills are marketable and it seems like a waste to go through one.
It is a waste. Although a good resource to use--you cannot leave it up to the recruiter to get all of your job contacts.

What do you have to offer? The headhunters send in your resume, and if it is not what the company is interested in, then your resume goes in the trash.
