It depends on how you're applying. If you are going directly to a company's career center, some companies force you to complete their online application process, while others permit you to attach a Word file or other document that contains your resume.

Most online job posting sites do not have a mechanism to accept an e-mail version of a resume - the ones that accept document uploads are looking for Word files.
