Sorry, Yahoo won't spellcheck this!

Before you turn off the unit make a note what number the dial is sitting on. Some fridges have separate dials for main compartment and the freezer.

First go through the food:
If it's fuzzy and green or orange OR
if it's not the color it should be -- throw it out.
If it smells bad -- throw it out.
If the leftovers are more than 3-4 days old -- throw them out.
If it's soft and supposed to be firm -- throw it out.
If it's hard and supposed to be soft -- if it's bread use it for crumbs; if it's vegetable -- throw it out.
If it's slimmy -- throw it out.

Look at the expiration dates on the products. Even if they are past due, if they still look and smell ok, use them. If they look funky, you got it -- throw it out.

Freezer: When you unload freezer stuff, place the items in a cooler to keep them from thawing.
Again look at the dates on the products. If there's excess frost on meats or whatever, it's freezer burned. If it's just a little burn, thaw it, cut off the burn, and cook it today.
If it's frozen veggies and the bag sounds crunchy with ice, it's freezer burned. You can take the chance of cooking it, but the texture and taste will suffer. I throw them out.

Take out the shelves and wash them in warm soapy water, rinse and dry. Wipe down the inside of the fridge with a wet warm cloth. You can use a no-rinse cleaner. Don't use abrasives and don't use scrubbies, they'll damage the surface.
If the fridge smells after the cleaning. Fill a shallow bowl with baking soda and put in there. Load up you stuff and turn the unit (refridgerator and freezer) back on.
After a week or so you can just keep a box of baking soda in there and change it out when recommended.

ADDITIONAL:
If the cooling coils are in the back and you can reach them: lightly dust them with a vacuum using the brush attachment. If the coils are underneath the fridge, be extra careful dusting those. The coils are very close together and can catch anything you try to use in there.
Also under the fridge or freezer section you'll see a collection pan. Take that out and wash it off.

I start by taking absolutely everything out including the shelves and baskets. This also proves handy at sorting through the pickles that may have gone out of date too!

Then I use just a weak solution of dishwashing liquid and hot water and start at the top, working down giving all the inside surfaces a good clean with a soft cloth, and a bit of elbow grease if there are sticky bits from jams etc.

Then I use the same on the compartments in the door of the fridge.

I dry it all out thoroughly using kitchen towel, and then if your lucky you can fit the shelves and salad boxes into a dishwasher and run them on a glass cleaning cycle and then return to their rightful spaces. Otherwise its a good scrub in the sink for the plastic boxes and a spritz and a wipe of window cleaner on the glass parts.

All back in the fridge and then start to rearrange the now all within eat-by-date food back into the sparkling new space.

If your fridge happens to have a bad odour, I'd suggest slicing a potato in half and leaving it on a saucer in the fridge for a few hours - soaks up the smells really well! As does some bicarbonate of soda.

Good Luck, its not the easiest or most pleasant of household chores but it is satisfying to open a clean fridge!

Sort thru and toss all things that are expired or will expire before you think you'll use them.

Take every thing out of the fridge and use a solution of diluted bleach water and paper towels to clean all of the surfaces.

Place a new fridge fresh box of baking soda in the clean fridge and put your stuff back in it.

******A really good habit to get into is to use a Sharpie marker to mark all jars and bottles with the date you opened them. Then there's less chance you'll eat some thing that's expired.*******

It's a fairly simple job if you just do one shelf at a time, one drawer at a time. I use soft scrub gel bleach for EVERY thing. There really is nothing more powerful than bleach, no matter how fancy the products look. Using it with some hot water and gloves, you'll get all the sticky messes off no problem. I

I'll take my drawers out and wash them in the sink too.
