Despite orders from Hitler that Paris should be held to the last and to destroy the city, the general in charge surrendered. That was in 1944......Operation Overlord was the name of the movement to liberate it.
By April 1943, Hitler had lost his forces in Stalingrad and was about to lose North Africa. He recognized that he had to reinforce France against a possible invasion. Paris as a liberated European city was the symbol of the fall of the Nazis and Hitler.

It was symbolic in that the city of Paris had no special military significance and the Germans did not defend it. It was however highly significant politically and psychologically as the liberation of the capital city of a major power defeated by Germany at the start of the war.

I wasn't a real victory because the American drive on Paris allowed the Germans to withdraw to the east. I have heard the reasons for going to Paris were political, to prevent left-wing forces from consolidating in control there. I'm not sure of that though.
It doesn't show the American army at their best.
