As a former Beauty Pagent judge, I highly recommend that she sings a song that she enjoys. Something that she feels comfortable and confident singing.
Don't make her sing something she isn't familliar with or something that is out of her range.
Most judges appreciate "new" music something fun and fresh.
I highly recommend that she sing something from a Disney show, or a song that is found on a Kids Bop CD.
Unless the child's voice is beyond her years and she can sing like an adult, age appropriate songs are far better for a child to sing, rather than something that should be sung by an adult.
Also while she is singing, a few hand movements, walks or dance moves are always appreciated by the judges. It shows confidence and personality.
The most important thing to remember mom is let HER be the star, let HER choose the music and dance steps and build her confidence SO high that she just goes out there and has fun. That's what it's all about.
I hope this helps. Enjoy the pageant and GOOD LUCK!

If you've ever seen American Idol, then you know that when a little kid sings 'jazz' it makes the kid look creepy! Let her sing something more appropriate for a 12 year old to sing. Jazz is an adult form of music that comes off as ridiculous when sang by children. She's 12. Let her be 12 so she can really shine! What does SHE want to sing? Listen to HER. :-)

My friend was just like your daughter. Sometimes people just . . . change. Don't bug her about it because that will only make her more upset. However, don't completely neglect her. Just don't treat her like anything has changed. She'll make a decision whether ot not do keep being that way. But changing your taste in music doesn't always mean they're going bad. And you know, sometimes sad songs are just... they make you think more. That's why a lot of people listen to them, because they express more feeling, etc. I wouldn't worry. It's normal for a person to change interests/look at least twice in their life. It's probably a phase. But, with descretion, talk to her, and see if something's going on. Just don't push it too much - NO therapy. Trust me, a little is a lot. Just listen to what she wants and try not to influence her too much, pre teens/teens don't take too kindly to be harrassed by their parents. I wouldn't worry, unless she starts doing more severe things.

What about "Life is a Cabaret" from the Broadway show and then movie "Cabaret?" It's the show-stopper that is sung by Liza Minelli (a much-younger, much-thinner and less drug-addled Liza) and I've seen it done at pageants to rousing audience applause. It's not too difficult either if your daughter has a decent voice. Good luck!!
