I'm writing an article for my workplace's newsletter on anime since I'm a diehard fan :) but I wish to know what anime shows/movies should I name to be able to interest people who may have never seen anime before. What anime titles should I include to show that anime is simply great and that it is not only intended for children, like most european and American cartoons?

Almost anything Miyazaki for the completely uniniated and to validate anime as a legitimate art form.
Akira to represent mature, imaginative storytelling, and Cowboy Bebop to mix both ideas and show that anime can be mature and artistic without insisting on being over the top. Let's face it; the convoluted pseudo-psychotheophilosobabble that is the typical anime fan's bread and butter often alienates those who are on the outside looking in. I wouldn't recommend those as someone's initiation into anime. To me, it sounds like teaching someone to swim by tossing them into the deep end.

I would suggest watching Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in a Shell or Steam Boy. These are great animes with a very deep and well-thought storyline. It's my opinion that what sets anime from other cartoons isn't the style used (because even the style greatly varies from artist to artist) but by the overall depth of the story. Character development in anime shows are really hard to predict unlike in other cartoon genres. Anime is about presenting ideas through drawing.

A nice addition would be watching the Animatrix series for the Matrix after going through some anime. You'll appreciate the contrast between a purely Japanese-thought/created anime versus one that has gone through western conceptualization and editing.

Hope this helps!

Try the following series Gungrave, Cowboy bebop, and Ghost in the shell, Freedom.
With animation films, try some films of Miyazaki, some of Otomo (Akira, Steamboy, spriggan).

And why not try some Western Animation with French animated cyberpunk detective film : Renaissance?

Try Ghost in the Shell,
its a complicated story and the animation is awesome, certainly not to be viewed by a younger audience. You actually forget you are watching a cartoon, its so realistic.

Cowboy Bebop, since it has a good story and its easy to grasp even if you didn't start from the beginning. Plus, it has good character development.

PS I wish they'd bring it back.

If you've got time to sit through a feature, I'd go with Akira, or with Spirited Away.
