practice practice practice. If you are using the pencil type and having trouble try the other types. I am talking about the liquid ones. They are kinda of like markers...they are a lot easy to apply because you don't have to press so hard for the color to show up like the eye liner pencils. Also if you prefer the pencils...there are eyeliners out there that smooth on easier by getting them wet with hot water. I had a lot of trouble too at first, just takes practice.

Practice makes perfect. I had lots of trouble putting on black eyeliner in the beginning too, but you just have to keep trying to get it right.
One way is to slightly extend the eye by closing one of your eyes and pulling the eyelid out from the outer corner so that it's smooth, then apply the eyeliner. If you get it crooked, don't immediately wipe it all off- get a Q-tip and dip that in some toner, making sure the excess toner drips off, then try to 'erase' or straighten out the crooked line. You might be able to fix it using this technique.

If your using liquid I would reccomend placing you right/left elbow on the desk and then slowly practise making a clear line. If at first you can't suceed try, try and try again. This motto definatly works with eye liner!
I would also reccomend dark eyeshadow with a wet small sharop eyeshadow brush.
You could try it with eyeliner (pencil version) if your finding this diffucult. Slow easy steps, make sure not to rush!

Well if you are putting it on your lid I would get and angled brush. I use bare minerals eyeliner powder. It is kind of expensive but it will stay on all day! The brush looks like it is bent but its supposed to be...you wet the brush with just water and then dip it in the powder and mix it up. The angle on the brush is perfect to make a nice line along the lid....try going to to qvc.com! Go luck!
