High sugar levels in your blood can be unhealthy for both you and your baby. If the diabetes isn't treated, your baby may be more likely to have problems at birth. For example, your baby may have a low blood sugar level or jaundice, or your baby may weigh much more than is normal. Gestational diabetes can also affect your health. For instance, if your baby is very large, you may have a more difficult delivery or need a cesarean section.
You will need to follow a diet suggested by your doctor, exercise regularly and have blood tests to check your blood sugar level. You may also need to take medicine to control your blood sugar level.
Shortly after delivery, your baby may also have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) because his body will still be producing extra insulin in response to receiving extra glucose from you. Your delivery team will test his blood sugar at birth by taking a drop of blood from his heel. If it's low, you'll want to feed him as soon as possible, either by breastfeeding or giving him some formula or sugar water. (In severe cases of hypoglycemia, he might be given an IV glucose solution.)

Gestational Diabetes is when the blood sugar level is raised as a part of pregnancy. The baby is at a slightly raised level of having diabetes in later life. The most immediate problem is the baby is larger than average at birth. If a baby is born that weighs over 11 lbs, the mother likely had gestational diabetes. The biggest thing that you need to be aware of as a mother is that this increases your risk of having diabetes later in life.

You can control it by monitoring your blood sugar level. Figure out what causes the level to rise and avoid eating too much of those items.
Yes, it can harm the baby if it is not controlled during the pregnancy. If it is controlled, the baby should be fine.
I had gestational diabetes, and my son was normal when he was born. 7lbs 6oz. No health complications and he has not gotten sick as much as other children I know.
Just keep a check on the blood sugar level and watch what you eat and it will be fine. You can also get diabetic recipes on the internet.
