It was when I finally realized I can't do anything about the people I was blaming for all my difficulties. I gained the insight that those negative influences were people I could better live without. I was then able to get on with living.
The next step was to recognize what I could enjoy doing, and what I could assume personal responsibility for. Without assuming personal responsibility, life's work has no value.
Work is pleasure and very satisfying. (Tell me a great game of basketball doesn't involve work!) The correct work should be something you choose to enjoy. It is not something to avoid. Don't slave for dollars. Pursue honorable activities that provide personal satisfaction.
Don't evaluate your life by relying on the opinions of others. (Especially their opinions about your income. I've known people who made good money doing work they hated and wasted it trying to find some satisfaction in life.)
Life without problems is impossible. Choose to have problems you like to resolve. If you must spend a third of your life working, you better find work you enjoy.
SO ENJOY!
Happiness will follow.

One major turning point was the day I was notified I had received a full 4-year college scholarship.
But the truth is, our lives have many turning points. We don't realize how major an event or decision was until many years later...the chain of consequences lead to a whole different life journey.
