What SPB suggested sounds right. If the current audio device is default (laptop sound card/mic), then turning off or muting volume would just mute the default sound card, which still leaves the laptop mic as default. She should select her other audio device as default or manually select which device to use. At any rate
1. Double click volume control (the speaker icon on taskbar)
2. Options
3. Properties
4. Select recording
5. Choose whic device you want to use from the drop down menu for your recording(mic).

Right Click on the Speaker Icon on the Task-bar at bottom Right. Select ' Open Volume control' then, simply put a Check-mark in the box under Microphone. This disables the Microphone.

You should be able to double click the little VOLUME ICON on your taskbar near the CLOCK....
From there can you just MUTE your MICROPHONE... and it wont pick you up...
Otherwise you would need to disable it from the Device Manager, which I dont recommend.
To do that follow these steps...
Click START>
CONTROL PANEL>
SYSTEM>
click the HARDWARE tab>
DEVICE MANAGER>
And in this window, if you click the + symbol on the
"SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS"
you will probably find your MIC in there...
If you see your MIC, in that list, just right click it, and click DISABLE, it wont come back on ever again untill you RE-ENABLE it...

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Device Properties....Audio tab. This lets you set the default recording device. Maybe this is the place?
