Yes, of course we do. We always like to have examples of what is possible.

However I doubt the the type of hero that runs around with his knickers outside of his tights is quite the thing. I'm thinking more of the Leonardos, Wolfgangs, Einsteins, and so on on the one hand, and then the ordinary guy ( or gal ) who just pulls out all the stops, things like going back into the flaming house to save the baby, or hurling oneself in front a speeding vehicle to grab the toddler...that kind of thing.

Altruism is one of the most underrated of human attributes in my book, and personal heroism is probably the best example of this.

They seem to need a hero other than Jehovah and his son, Jesus. Which is why we have "American Idol", beauty pageants, etc.

This however, would be a machination of the Devil. It's idolatry.

Read Ephesians 6:11 Put on the complete suit of armor from God that YOU may be able to stand firm against the machinations of the Devil; 12 because we have a wrestling, not against blood and flesh, but against the governments, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the wicked spirit forces in the heavenly places.

No, heroes are trouble. What the world needs is tolerance, Patience, and a willingness to compromise slightly. Or possibly just a willingness to let people alone...

I think the world needs many heroes, not just one. at the same time, I think we have heroes around us, we just need to open our eyes and pay attention to those who dedicate their lives to helping others: teachers, policemen, firemen, socialworkers and volunteers. just to name a few.
