In addition to the perennial lobelia (described above)-the annual
lobelia does in fact have a propensity to self seed if left undisturbed at the end of the flowering season and will likely emerge in bloom the following summer from new seedlings.
So by definition it is an annual because you are not getting repeat flowering from the same plant.

You can now buy a lobelia plant that is a perenial and apart from being the same colour it is nothing like the annual lobelia to look at. Much more hardy well it would have to be.
I have aplant growing in a pot on my patio for those disbelievers.

Hi Anne, Lobelia is a plant best treated as a half-hardy annual. However I have some in the garden from last summer and it is still blooming. That's climate change for you.

Depends on which one you buy and where you live. The blue, purple, and white stuff you see with the bedding plants in the spring is not, unless you live in the deep south or southern california.
There are a very large number of them that are perennial, the most famous being the cardinal flower as noted above.

Must admit I didn't know there was a Perennial, I always thought it was an annual.
However as noted below it does self seed quite easily and I have a patch come up each year from the last years self seeding
