The other day our first floor apt filled up with the smell of gasoline coming from the basement so badly that we could not go in for hours. We contacted the landlord but they blamed it on something irrelevant and left. Sometimes it is so bad that we cannot breathe, but if we open all of the windows it goes away. The problem is that the weather is going to drop below freezing tonight and we can't open them. We could not find the source of the odor in the basement. When the heater kicks on in the cold I can only imagine that it will worsen since the air comes from the basement. The other tenants in the house have the same complaint, but they are barely ever home so they just left it to us to take care of it. What should we do or who should we call? Or is this something that we just have to wait out?

I did call the gas company but since it is gasoline and not natural gas, there is nothing that they can do about it.

If you have a strong smell of gasoline don't call the gas company call the fire department. Turn of any ignition sources and leave the building.

OK you have called the Gas company. It's not Natural gas. That means that there has been a gasoline spill. If it is as strong as you say. Call the fire department!!!! and leave the building.

Gasoline? or Natural Gas? They are very different smells Natural gas would be from your furnace, gasoline would have to be brought in by your self or another person.
Either way get the hell out! Before you blow up or get asphyxiated.Call the land lord again and demand he do something and the gas company. Let us know what happens!

The vapors are coming from somewhere, and they are strong so you need to be careful. It sounds like you,or one of the other tenants, have a gas tank leak coming from a car.Call the fire dept.and get a record of what they say,in case there is a need for it later. That is very strange, gasoline not natural gas.Get to the bottom of this one, the vapors when extra strong can ignite.Get help.

Call the Gas Co. ASAP!!!!!!!! You should never have to wait it out when it comes to something like the smell of gasoline. Shame on your landlord. I'd be looking for another place to live if I was you.

No don't wait it out another second. You need to call the gas company. You're life could be in danger. If they find nothing then I would call the police and report it.You're paying the bills there and I wouldn't pay another cent for rent until it's taken care of.
