my cousin recently moved into a new flat and she has a major roach problem! the owner of the flat tried getting exterminators in to spray the place but no luck, they are just everywhere (well, mostly in the kitchen) its those miniture ones that are hard to catch up with, let alone kill, not the big super-nasty ones...so, how exactly can she get rid of them AND stop them from coming back? preferably at a minimal cost

Find the nest, here is my story:

I kept a clean apartment but what started attracting roaches was when I moved my iguana out of a class cage into a wire cage about 6 feet tall. I began noticing roaches. The exterminator came out but I would not allow him to spray my pets room (seen no roaches there). The exterminator told me that he seen no roach nest but sprayed the apartment anyway. Later, I continued to see roaches and checked my pets room since that was the only room not sprayed. I found the roach nest in a small box next to my iguana's cage. They would leave the box and eat my iguana's droppings and return to the dark box. The nest was "ugly" with about 24 adult roaches, eggs and baby roaches.

3 months Later, I had roach problem again, checked my iguana's room and could not find roaches in there so I just sat and watched/waited. Seen a roach crawl from under my pets light stand. Took the stand into the bath tub and begin spraying it. Out came another 2 dozen of large roaches, babies and inside were eggs, again, leaving the light stand to enter the cage and eat the droppings and return to the base of the light stand.

I sprayed the room and now will invest in roach motels. Good luck.

P.S. If you have them, look for the nest !

I was a contractor that worked in rental properties. Needless to say I learned a lot about roaches. If you live in an apartment/duplex or multi family facility the entire building needs to be exterminated. Contrary to popular belief roaches need water more than they need "food". Try to get rid of as much clutter as possible, boxes, plastic bags etc so the spray can penetrate. If you are a renter the landlord is responsible by law to have your home exterminated. Document take pictures to plead your case, Also be sure to get rid of your vacuum cleaner bags after vacuuming. A female roach will drop her egg sac if she feels threatened and that is what you vacuum up.

If the exterminator was out and they are back, then call him and tell him. When I rented an apartment that had that problem,I called the exterminator and they came out. Then 2 days later they were back(in my kitchen)I called the exterminator and told them, they returned and saturated every crack. Then I called them back just once more and the problem was over. They have a guarantee on the spray, call them back..Good luck, I been there and done that...

The owner needs to get off his butt and get an exterminator. If he won't your cousin needs to move. The only products I ever recommend for DIY are Combat or Raid roach baits. But they will take months to get rid of them all. Bombs and aerosol sprays will just stink the place up and move the roaches around.

Your cousin may also want to seal visible cracks with steel wool. She can pick that up at Home Depot or a similar type of store.

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing cockroaches and most other insects. You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them.
