I'm going to be buying an electric guitar and amp soon, and I was curious if I should get something like an Epiphone SG or Les Paul guitar with a 15 watt no-name practice amp, or get a 80 watt Marshall with an average Yamaha student guitar? Is it the guitar or the amp that makes the most difference for sound quality?

Spend more money on the guitar and get the practice amp for now. It'd be cheaper later to buy a better amp vs. buying a better quality guitar.

The Yamaha guitar is going to sound like crap no matter what amp you play it thru. In my opinion, get the SG or something in that quality range, then buy a mid-priced amp. You don't HAVE to buy a marshall amp to get a good one. Crates are cheaper and I've always gotten great sound out of them. The point is, if you get a crappy guitar its going to sound crappy even on a nice amp.

I'm running against the consensus here....

Put it on the amp. I have a Line6 Vetta II, and ANYTHING I put into sounds great. Even my kid's $99 Memphis electric sounds good. Friend of mine plays a Fender Squire through his, and it sounds awesome.

The more expensive guitars will play nicer, but the bottom line for sound is that amplifier. Most the stuff from overseas is actually pretty decent, though I will agree, the Gibson/Fender guitars made here in the USA are the best.

I understand the reasoning behind buying a great GUITAR first....but I'm the kind of player that would hate having anything crappy...how about this solution...a middle of the road guitar and a decent AMP? I guess it depends on how much you want to spend...but you could get an Epiphone G400 or LP AND one of those Vox AD50 valvetronix amps all for around $800.

Put your money into the guitar. You can always upgrade your amp later. I wouldn't suggest buying a practice amp....I've always thought they sound terrible. You might be able to find a used amp for cheap. They usually hold up pretty well and it will probably sound better than the practice amp.

PUT THE MONEY INTO THE GUITAR. THEY HOLD VALUE OVER TIME. BUT BE CAREFULL WHEN BUYING A USED AMP. MAKE SURE THAT THE SPEAKERS ARE NOT BLOWN OR CRACKED.
