I am currently at a hotel, using their wireless network. To get my email, I must connect to my workplace via VPN, but for some reason VPN is set up such that I can't browse the web.

I'd like to be able to grab my mail and do other work-specific tasks via my VPN connection, but utilize the hotel's wireless for web browsing.

How can I configure my system (Windows XP Pro), is there a setting in the browser, do I need to set up some routing, or is there some other method?

The people who answered above me are incorrect; you should be able to surf the web and connect to the VPN at once. If you're using Windows' built in VPN client:

1.Right-click your VPN connection, click properties.
2. Click the "Networking" tab
3. Double-click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
4. Click "Advanced"
5. Clear the check box on "Use default gateway on remote network"
6. Click OK a few times to confirm all dialogs

That should do it.

If you're using Cisco or Nortel VPN, the process is slightly different. Let me know if this is the case.

you'd have to disconnect from the VPN to browse the web since they are not allowing it with the VPN connection. There is something inside of the VPN that is not allowing the web browsing, not Internet Explorer

i suppose if the VPN is done properly you could not do both at the same time. for security reasons. cause if you are hacked from the hotel's wireless you give a free gateway for any hacker to access your system at work.

if you are just trying to check your mail do they offer web email access? you should not need to vpn in to access that.

does the hotel allow vpn connections? some places charge you to do this. you might need to ask them to open a port.. etc.
