The actors did go through rigorous training to get the physique for their roles, as can been seen in the HBO First Look, and multitude of magazine articles. They worked out for a few months, I think 3 or 4. They even lifted weights during filming.

No they all trained for many months to get ripped. However a little known fact is that Speedo is the official sponsor of the Spartan Army which gives them discounted Electrolysis services.

in an interview, Gerard Butler says he worked out for about 9 months before the movie to look like that, and several people have confirmed that this is true. about the rest of them, i don't know, but thye were REALLY nice to look at. besides, peole do extreme things for movies. remember what Christian Bale did for "the Machinist"?

I noticed all the hard bodies in the movie. I think that they did put a lot of workout effort into and makeup helped out with the rest... Shadowing effect can create or dramatically inhance the abs..

According to an interview with Zack Snyder on MTV.com from this morning he states that they were all real. Their training was very intense for the movie.

Whoever told you that was clearly trying to put down the work that these men put into their craft.
